Perpetuating
Hawaiʻi's trails
for Hawaiʻi's people

JOIN OUR EFFORTS

Mahalo to those who joined this year's lā hoʻāla ala hele

In 2004, the Hawaiʻi County Council passed Resolution 161-04, which designated a day in October to acknowledge and recognize the importance of historic Hawaiian trails to the people of Hawaiʻi. This day is named, Lā Hoʻāla Ala Hele (Day of Trail Reawakening). Every year E Mau chooses a day in October to do something special for historic Hawaiian trails on Moku o Keawe. We have cleaned ʻōpala from trails, removed woody vegetation, hiked lesser known trails, all in the interest of keeping these special trails alive in today’s modern world.

This year, we cleared tall weeds from a portion of the Kohanaiki-Kaloko Trail (a.k.a. Alanui Nāwahiahu or Trail to the Sea Coast) where it has been protected in the Kauhale i ke Kula Uka development in North Kona. The alanui was nearly destroyed in this area until E Mau, Native Hawaiian descendants of Kohanaiki and Kaloko, together with the State of Hawaiʻi’s Nā Ala Hele Program and the National Park Service’s Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, fought to save it.
